How I make my own Roof Shingles

After couple of setbacks, I finally came up with a way of making wooden roof shingles for my house relatively fast and simple. In a single day it is possible to make around 7 square meters of roofing this way (about 75 square feet) in one person. This type of shingles is very durable, lightweight type of shingle roofing. The downside are high demands on manual labor needed to produce them. The type of shingles I make was the most common roofing in countryside of many parts of central and eastern Europe. I made a video documenting making of these shingles using the traditional tools - without modern power tools - some time ago -    • Making wooden shingles  . The best material for these shingles are log pieces with length ranging from 30 to 60cm, having as little knots and twists as possible. I use spruce trees, which are the most common lumber used today, in the past fir was most prevalent in Europe. For America cedar trees were commonly used.
