Inauguration: Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar officially inaugurated the event on January 19 by hoisting the Dharma Dhwaja (saffron flag). Historical & Spiritual Significance Ancient Roots: The festival is rooted in the legend of Mamankam, a medieval fair held every 12 years where Kerala's kings would gather. It originally served as a platform for spiritual rituals, martial arts demonstrations, and political transitions. Revival: The tradition ended around 1766 due to regional invasions and British intervention. The 2026 event, led by the Juna Akhara (one of India's largest monastic orders) and Mahamandaleshwar Swami Anandavanam Bharati Maharaj, aims to restore this "civilizational rhythm." Sacred Bathing: The month of Magha is considered highly auspicious. It is believed that during this time, seven sacred rivers converge into the Bharathapuzha (Dakshina Ganga). A holy dip (Magha Snana) in the river is thought to provide spiritual purification similar to the Kumbh Melas of North India. Tirunnavaya Railway Station This local station is just about 2 km from the temple. While many local passenger trains stop here, larger express trains may not. Tirur Railway Station (TIR): Located approximately 8–11 km away, Tirur is a major stop for most express trains. From here, you can easily find auto-rickshaws, taxis, or local buses to reach the temple. Special Services: For the 2026 Kumbh Mela, special train services are operating from North Indian cities like Varanasi and Rishikesh, as well as additional stops for regular trains like the Jan Shatabdi and Antyodaya Express at nearby stations such as Kuttipuram and Shoranur. Local Buses: Frequent private and state buses run from major nearby towns like Tirur (8 km), Kuttipuram (7 km), and Malappuram (35 km). Driving: The town is easily accessible via Highway 17. From the main road junction, the temple is just a short auto-rickshaw ride away. By Air Calicut International Airport (CCJ): This is the nearest airport, situated about 42–45 km away. Travel from Airport: You can hire a taxi directly from the airport, which typically takes about 1.5 hours to reach Thirunavaya. Alternatively, you can take a bus or taxi to the Kozhikode railway station and board a train heading south towards Tirur.
