In the juxtaposition of spirituality and conservation, the centuries-old Hayagriva Madhav Temple in Hajo, Assam, plays an unexpected role in the conservation of the black softshell turtle, a species declared extinct in the wild by the International Union for Conservation of Nature 17 years ago. Remarkably, the temple pond provides a sanctuary for these turtles, forming a safe haven where they've continued to survive and breed.
