On the other hand, a sandy beach beside an ocean with perfect surf is a mighty fine place to wait, even knowing there's not the slightest chance of a snow...especially knowing there's not the slightest chance of a snow. Some new traditions are easily adopted. Christmas in Hawai'i has a special sound and feel to it. It's reflected in some special music; in the greeting of Alex Anderson's classic "Mele Kalikimaka", with sun and swaying palm trees; in the backyard party of Ken Makuakane's "Ho'okani Christmas Style", with ukes, slack key guitar, food, and family; in Rick Cunha's beautiful "Hawaiian Sleigh Ride", inspired by the old island custom of sliding down slopes on top of big, slippery banana leaves (no snow required). Old and newit's music meant to be played and listened to together, made sweeter by the company of family and friends, and by the warm and familiar sounds of ukulele, steel and slack key guitars, and island voices. It's easy to catch the message of Christmas in Hawai'i, as it is in every latitude, in every tradition. Christmas encourages peace, goodwill, and charity. It reminds us how fine it is to be together while we're here on this earth. It's also one more terrific reason to give birth to some great music. So grab those ukes. We're just getting started here.
