However, we found ourselves in that position, and gave it a go. I have done other 3+ hour stints, but I was not expecting to, this race. I was not prepared with hydration, etc, and had to send it, despite my muscles deciding to start locking up, around mid-way through the race. You will notice moments where I appear to be either talking to myself or screaming at the guy in front of me. That is me “motivating” myself to keep going or “verbalizing pain” to make it through the loading of the corners. Its a bit like a Karate Kiiyah!. It really does help when your abs are screaming and provides some muscle release. The times I am sticking my leg out is me trying to avoid a Charlie horse. Again, I was not prepared with proper hydration, and muscle spasms are part of dehydration/exhaustion. I missed quali because I did not want to be too tired for the race, so I sat out the 2nd half of practice, forgetting that the last 5 mins are qualifier. Oops. So, I started from the back, which was a blessing in many ways. It is a ton of fun charging back up towards the front. I drove very hard, and hopefully, fairly. I would use the chrome horn a bit to make sure folks knew they were being pursued and to try to, when it would not break grip and be somewhat beneficial, tippy tap them along. The objective is to bring the mid-corner pace up, fairly. Eventually you either get a clean pass, a point-by, or the other driver makes a mistake and you can get around. On this narrow track, you need to be right on their behind and ready to go under, when the door opens. I felt like this was one of my best races. I charged relentlessly, pushing through pain, never losing pace. It really, really hurt to push; my neck, abs, and thighs/calves were shot. There were waves of it, where it was very hard to endure, but if you pushed through, it was do-able. Check out my handwork as the race goes along. I have active hands, generally, and it gets pretty funny, late in the race. You can see me starting to push/wedge the wheel, hanging on for dear life, gently. I started last and made my way up to P2, later in the race. A combination of events prevented a better finish. At one point, I accidentally punt a guy, and I slow way down to try to let him catch back up, losing some positions. Later, I also get accidentally punted down to P7 or so, where I finish out the race. I am very pleased with the result, given that the objective was simply to see it through. However, I think I could have placed a bit better, had I qualified and if I can eventually figure out how to buckle a harness, quickly. I want to give a huge Shout-Out to Bryan Furey for being a badass and also soloing this race. Way to go, my friend! We ain’t done yet! I also want to give a big Thank You to the super-professional Endurance Karting team who helped out with the race timing and officiating. Big Props to Xtreme Zone and Touring Kart Championship for yet another super-fun and super-gnarly race. Finally, a big “thank you” to all the racers who showed up and threw down... You Rock! See you at the 1Hr next month. Pilot: Dom Callan, Rebel Scum Racing
