This video explains how particle size distribution in clay soil can be determined from digital images captured using mobile phones. The advantage of this technique is that it is simple and does not depend on the mechanical sieves normally applied in the soil gradation analysis. The methodology is as follows 1. Capture a high resolution image of uniformly spread soil. Normally a representative soil sample should be used. 2. Transfer the image into your computer and open it up using ImageJ software (an open source software) 3. Set scale on your image using a known distance 4. Select an area of interest on the image and crop it out. 5. Save the cropped image for later use 6. Convert the image into a 8-bit image since color is not important when analyzing particle sizes 7. Convert the 8-bit image into a binary image through thresholding process. Compare the save image (see 5 above) with the binary image to ensure all particles in the original image have been identified. 8. Set the measurement by selecting parameters to be analyzed on the identified particles 9. Set the limits for area and circularity and then analyze all identified particles in the binary image 10. Export data generated to Microsoft excel and use it to establish particle size distribution histograms. ImageJ software can also be used to generate graphs but the use of MS Excel allows for data cleaning and removal of spurious data before generating graphs. Also, it allows data to be presented in many different forms.
