Reactions to ongoing riots in Paris suburb

(2 Nov 2005) SHOTLIST 1. Wide shot of Paris street with kiosk in background 2. Kiosk manager working with magazines behind her 3. Various of French newspapers with headlines about the violence in the Paris suburbs 4. SOUNDBITE (French) Louis Cayeux, Vox pop: "When the suburbs go into flames, in France, or in the United States or in London or anywhere else, you never know where it's going to stop. Therefore today we must stop the violence, with acts of repression obviously, but also give projects to the youths of the suburbs who, like those all over the world, have no hope, live only war, unemployment and misery. Repression yes but a project behind it for the youth." 5. Paris streets 6. Man walking down the street 7. SOUNBITE (French) Valerie Ley, Vox pop: "Solutions? Well first of all we have to find ways to keep them busy - that is to say, their studies and then give them a job, that would be a good start." 8. Various of Paris streets STORYLINE While French president Jacques Chirac called on Wednesday for calm and a firm hand in riot-hit suburbs and warned of a dangerous situation, newspaper headlines were not tender with the government and the way it has been handling the clashes so far. After clashes between police and angry youths continued for a sixth-night in Paris suburbs, the French media and general public awoke with concern on Wednesday morning. With headlines like "gang war at the government" or "(French Interior Minister Nicolas) Sarkozy persists and signs", newspapers reflected on the events of the last days, and how they propelled tensions between Sarkozy and his long time rival, French Prime minister Dominique de Villepin. In the streets however, people were more concerned with the roots of the problem rather than by the political turmoil inside the government. One man, Louis Cayeux, said France "should give projects to the youths of the suburbs who, like those all over the world, have no hope, live only war, unemployment and misery." "Repression yes but a project behind it for the youth," he added. Valerie Ley said: "We have to find ways to keep them busy - that is to say, studies, and then give them a job, that would be a good start." Sarkozy told Europe-1 radio that police detained 34 people overnight. Sarkozy - blamed by many for fanning the violence with tough talk and tactics - defended his approach and vowed to restore calm. The minister recently called rioters "scum" and has vowed to "clean out" Paris' troubled suburbs. Because of the unrest, Sarkozy cancelled a visit to Pakistan and Afghanistan that had been planned for November 6-9, his office announced on Wednesday. In Aulnay-sous-Bois - one of the worst-hit suburbs - police wearing riot gear fired rubber bullets at gangs of youths who torched 15 cars and set ablaze mounds of garbage to impede the advancing riot police on Tuesday night. Four people were arrested for throwing stones at police in nearby Bondy where 14 cars were burned, local officials said. A fire also engulfed a carpet store. France-Info radio reported that about 100 fires were burning in numerous suburbs of the Seine-Saint-Denis region, an area of soaring unemployment, delinquency and other urban ills, home to immigrant communities often from Muslim North Africa and West Africa. No trouble was immediately reported in Clichy-sous-Bois, where rioting began last Thursday following the accidental deaths of two teenagers.
