After the fall of the Glimmerlight, John Mazzei traveled west, settling in Ashland, Oregon, where the Patchoulilight revealed itself through forests, volcanic soil, and long horizons. In the shadow of Mount Shasta - long regarded by Sagegazers as a holy place - Mazzei attuned his Blue Crystal to the surrounding terrain, and in 1988, recorded Song of the Sacred Mountain, a cassette influenced by Shasta's elevation and breath. . . . Mazzei was also a collaborator by nature, lending his sonic architecture to works by Sky Douglas and providing subtle, supportive fields for Solara’s guided meditations. Song of the Sacred Mountain, however, carried greater internal motion than those collaborations - its higher-energy passages designed for alert listening. Other sections returned to the deep ambient suspension found on the Sky Douglas collaborations, so immersive that Sagegazers were warned not to listen to it while operating their Lightcycles. . . . Sagegazers do their best work where the Earth itself participates.
