The MTA has started disposing of the R46-type subway cars; iconic 70s-era equipment famous for its iconic Orange and Yellow interior seating. With the arrival of the R211 subway cars, the R46s are being progressively retired. For the time being, you can still find R46s on the G, N, Q, and W lines, as well as the Rockaway Park Shuttle. To accommodate critical infrastructure improvement works in the Rockaways, the Rockaway Shuttle Train service is operating between Far Rockaway and Rockaway Park. Trackage connecting the Rockaways to the rest of the subway system is partially inaccessible at the moment, essentially "marooning" these R46s on the Rockaway Shuttle. When full service reopens in May 2025, it is expected that these R46s will be retired, placed in reserve storage only to be used if absolutely needed, or transferred to Coney Island Yard for service on the G, N, Q, and W Lines.
