The legend is that Sati jumped into the Yajna Kunda of her Father Dakshya Prajapati as she couldn't tolerate him humiliating her husband Shiva. This enraged Shiva and he took out Sati's body and started doing Tandav nrutya the cosmic dance of destruction. Fearing the destruction of the universe Vishnu sent his Sudarshan Chakra to cut Sati's body. Her body got cut into 51 pieces and wherever each piece fell it became a Shakti peetha. There are some differing opinions about where exactly each body part of Sati had fallen. It is believed that her Left toes fell here. This place was discovered by Lal Saheb Prafulla Chandra Bhanja Deo in 1954 June 21st. He constructed the temple after the discovery. Lal Saheb Prafulla Chandra Bhanja Deo was the son of Sriram Chandra Bhanja Deo, the King of Bastar. He was a tantra sadhak. His first guru was Bamakshepa. His second guru was Thakur Nigamananda Saraswati. His third guru was Raman Kant Deba Sarma. It is said that Bamakhepa had asked Nigamananda to search for this place and Nigamananda's time to leave the body had come. So he had asked Prafulla Chandra Bhanja Deo and he could discover it.
