Engineering Newswire 90: Hands-Free Corvette on Air Force Test Track

Today on Engineering Newswire we're refitting unmanned helicopters, marveling at DARPA's new prosthetic arm, and driving a Corvette racecar hands-free. Today's episode features: Hands-Free Racecar Driving: Former Indie League racer, Sam Schmidt, got back behind the wheel to race a Corvette down and Air Force test track. Except, Schmidt is a quadriplegic which was the result of a spinal cord injury suffered during a race testing accident in 2000. Using a ball cap with reflective spheres, Schmidt can take to the track again. DEKA Receives FDA Approval: The DEKA arm-system from New Hampshire-based DEKA Integrated Solutions, has gained FDA approval. The arm system is an advanced electromechanical prosthetic upper limb with near-natural control that can perform multiple, simultaneous powered movements controlled by electrical signals from electromyogram (EMG) electrodes. The R-Bat Unmanned Helicopter System: The Rotary Bat is an unmanned helicopter system that combines Northrop Grumman's autonomous control systems with Yamaha Motor's RMAX remotely-piloted helicopter. With more than 25 years of experience producing remotely-piloted helicopters, Yamaha will be providing its proven airframe that has accumulated more than 2 million flight hours.
