Birth of the Common Rose Butterfly – July 7, 2025

Five years after planting Aristolochia (Dutchman’s pipe) in my garden, a Common Rose butterfly finally arrived and laid many eggs. On the morning of July 7, 2025 — the day of Tanabata — the larvae hatched. With their tiny black heads, they chewed through the eggshells and slowly emerged. It was the very first moment of life, beginning its journey in the summer sunlight. The newborn larvae eagerly ate the eggshells their mother left for them. By storing aristolochic acid from their host plant, Aristolochia, Common Rose butterflies become so unpalatable that even parasitic wasps avoid them. However, depending on only one host plant is a double-edged sword. If Aristolochia disappears, the Common Rose butterfly faces the risk of extinction.
