Join me, David Winnard, for another walk exploring the wildlife of Capel Curig in the heart of Eryri (Snowdonia National Park), where I return in search of one of the most unusual and rarely recorded fungi in North Wales — the remarkable Hazel Gloves. A few weeks ago I discovered this strange fungus growing on hazel trees, a species that is rarely recorded in the region. In this video I head back out on a circular walk around the woodlands of Capel Curig to see if I can locate more trees hosting this curious species and learn a little more about its local distribution. As always with a walk in Eryri, the target species is only part of the story. Along the way we encounter a wonderful variety of lichens, mosses and other woodland fungi thriving on the ancient trees and damp stonework of the valley. Early spring sunshine reveals the woodland slowly coming back to life after winter, making it a perfect day to explore and take a closer look at some of the smaller details of the landscape. The day also brings an unexpected encounter with a bird of prey (this one captive rather than wild), adding a surprise wildlife moment to the walk. Of course no trip to Capel Curig would be complete without a visit to the legendary Café Siabod, where I give in to temptation and stop for a well-earned breakfast and coffee before continuing the walk. With clear skies throughout the day, the mountains of Eryri provide a spectacular backdrop, with beautiful views of Snowdon (Yr Wyddfa), Crib Goch and Moel Siabod rising above the valley. If you enjoy fungi, lichens, woodland wildlife and exploring the landscapes of North Wales, this is a walk you won’t want to miss.
