Al Farooq Omar Bin Al Khattab Mosque, Dubai was designed by architect Muhammad Sheik Mubarak. It is named after Umar bin Al Khattab, a companion of Muhammad who became the second Caliph after Abu Bakr and was given the title Al Farooq, meaning someone who distinguished truth from falsehood. The exterior has whitewashed walls, impressive dome structure and 60 metre high minarets. It was completed in 2011. The architectural design is heavily influenced by Ottoman-era architecture, particularly the grand mosques of Turkey. It is often referred to as the "Blue Mosque". The mosque covers an area of over 8,700 square meters and can accommodate up to 2,000 worshippers at a time, making it one of the largest mosques in Dubai. The floor is covered with hand-woven, pure wool, red and gold carpets. The central dome is about 30 metres high. There are 15 smaller domes with four additional half domes surrounding the main one. A large chandelier hangs from the central dome. High resolution photographs are available from www.jonathaninbali.com
