ABOUT THIS FILM ___________________ How Bullfinches Feed The way bullfinches use their beaks is amazing. They have very powerful, short and stout beaks and work quickly, first stripping each berry of its flesh. They do this by rotating the berry around their bill using quite small stubby tongues whilst at the same time biting down several a times a second. Getting to the kernel After a few seconds all that's left of each red berry is its seed, which the bullfinch now manoeuvre with their tongue towards the back of its beak. Beaks adapted to crush Here, these finches have a special adaptation to their lower mandible - a raised, sharp-angled ridge – which they use to crack open the seeds to reach the seed kernel. The way the birds position each seed at the back of their bills and then manipulate their upper and lower mandibles like pair of secateurs to crack the seed in two is amazing. Watch in slow motion as they then spit out the husk shells and swallow the kernel. This whole process takes a matter of seconds and then straight away they are on with the next berry.
