A historic preservation project, dining car No.1663 is the last remaining of fifteen wooden dining cars built in 1910 for the Northern Pacific Railroad by the Barney and Smith Car Company of Dayton, Ohio. This particular car served on the North Coast Limited run, (Seattle to Chicago) from 1910 until October 1949, where upon it was retired from service at the old NP shops in South Tacoma. The car was saved from the scrap yards when two Northern Pacific carpenters purchased the car and had it shipped over the mountain pass to Easton, Washington to serve as a diner in that small railroad town located at the foothills of Stampede Pass. Since this video was produced in 2005, Project Coordinator, Dave Burns, funded the move himself and had the car safely transported back to Tacoma, Washington. Unfortunately, he has been unable to locate a covered facility for the car that he can afford and it appears that he may end up having to sell it to another interested party that has the money and vision to preserve a very unique piece of our early transportation history. Dave has kept the car heated and has maintained the required humidity 24/7 since it was moved back to Tacoma in 2006. If you have additional questions feel free to contact Dave by email at NPDiningcar@comcast.net Dave's goal for this project was to have the old dining car on public display on the vacated railroad right of way located on the University of Washington-Tacoma campus where it would help tell the story of Tacoma's early railroad history and provide a rather unique place for visitors and tourists to Tacoma to meet.
