The Guardian Angel Across the Ages: Paganism, Plato, and Christianity | Gigi Young

Believe it or not, humanity has not always been able to perceive the personal guardian angel. Our ability to recognize this spiritual companion developed gradually as human consciousness evolved. In early humanity, perception was more collective and tribal. Rather than experiencing a personal angel, people perceived the spiritual being that guided their tribe or people as a whole. In Anthroposophy this being is called the Folk Spirit, while in Christian tradition it corresponds to the Archangel. By the Greek period, leading up to the Incarnation, humanity began to individuate from the tribe. As this process unfolded, the personal guiding angel became more perceptible. In this context we encounter Plato’s concept of the Daimon, and the activity of angels, the rank below the Archangels, begins to appear in human awareness. Finally, with the Incarnation of Christ, humanity attained a deeper level of individuality.
