(28 Sep 2000) Natural Sound XFA Thousands of demonstrators clashed with Indonesian security forces on Thursday after a court dismissed charges of massive corruption against ex-dictator Suharto. Doctors in Indonesia have told the courts that ex-President Suharto will not be fit enough to be put on trial. Widespread anger erupted after the court accepted the findings of a 23-doctor medical team that Suharto is physically and mentally unfit to defend charges that he siphoned off almost 600 million (m) US dollars in state funds. The court also freed Suharto from house arrest and lifted other travel restrictions. Moreover, it ignored demands by prosecutors that he be tried in absentia - an alternative favored by the government. Bloody protests by students and pro-democracy activists ousted Suharto in 1998. Thursday's riots reflect the anger Indonesia's pro-democracy movement feel towards the former dictator not coming to trial. With his trial abandoned, his opponents now they fear he will never be punished for abuses committed during more than three decades of rule. Suharto denies the charges made against him. At least one man was killed and dozens injured in battles on Jakarta's rain-swept streets hours after a five-judge panel made its decision without the former despot ever setting foot in the heavily guarded courtroom.
