Speaker: Jessica Harris Webinar Date: 10/14/2025 Webinar Title: Comparing early seedling traits in Pinus albicaulis and Pinus flexilis across climates and rust resistance levels Bio: Jessica Harris grew up in a small forest community on Lake Michigan, where her backyard forest was a place of discovery and adventure. Not only was it the first place she fell in love with 5-needle pines, quirky fungi, and rare plants, but it was also where her brother and her developed a passion for protecting forest ecosystems. She obtained a bachelor's in environmental science with minors in Chemistry and Biology from DePaul University in Chicago, IL while running D1 cross country and track. During her undergraduate degree in 2017, she worked as a prairie restoration intern at the Black Earth Institute in Black Earth, WI where she grew a large outdoor organic garden, removed invasive species, and conducted quadrat and transect surveys. In 2018, she was obtained an internship and then part-time job working in the Botanical Collections at the Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago. There, she collaborated with regional bryologists and used herbarium specimens to create the first-ever Cook County Bryophyte Checklist and then used ArcGIS to map species distributions over time. She then went on to Oak Ridge, TN to work as an ecophysiology lab technician at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. There, she worked on cleaning and analyzing soil cores and then worked on data analysis for the NIST root publication during covid. During covid, she moved back to Michigan and worked as a microbiology lab technician. Ready for an outdoor adventure, she then worked with Dr. Danielle Ulrich on my master's research at Montana State University in Bozeman, MT. In our webinar, she will be sharing about her recent masters thesis work looking at early seedling traits in Pinus albicaulis and Pinus flexilis across climates and rust resistance levels
