In Great Britain, women were granted the right to vote in 1918. In France — in 1944. In Switzerland — in 1971. Crimean Tatar women began participating in elections earlier than most European women. The 1917 Kurultai allowed all Crimeans aged 20 and over to vote, regardless of gender. And it wasn’t a gift from men to women. The women’s movement in Crimea had begun back in the 19th century. After the 1944 deportation, Crimean Tatar women fought alongside men for the right to return to their homeland. For this, 14 women were sentenced to prison terms. Russia has surpassed the Soviet Union in its persecution of Crimean women. Today, 35 of them are on the list of Crimean political prisoners.
