Top Hunter: Roddy & Cathy Longplay (Neo Geo) [QHD]

Game Info --------------------------------------------------- Developer: SNK Publisher: SNK Year of Release: 1994 Game Review & Impressions --------------------------------------------------- Featuring some stunning pixel art visuals, Top Hunter might not have a name which trips off the tongue, but by golly, it's a feast for the ol' eye-balls. This is one of those Neo Geo titles which could almost justify the extortionate cost of the cartridge by the visuals alone, but there needs to be substance behind the visuals, and that's what I was curious to find out. The game is divided into a series of themed worlds, each divided into two separate levels. These consist of two playfields, one located in the near foreground, and second behind it. Players can jump between these playfields, avoiding hazards, seeking additional power-ups, or simply because the level design dictates they need to transition. Enemies occupy both playfields and, like the players, can transition between the two; a playfield you thought safe(er) can become increasingly perilous if enemies start leaping into proximity. The combat involves punching and grappling enemies which get close enough, using guns which they drop, or occasionally commandeering bipedal mech-machines, which can slap and stomp bad guys with ease. What's not immediately obvious is that both Roddy and Cathy have a series of special moves, which can be executed by inputting combinations of stick movements and button presses. These attacks can be powered up further by grabbing the the glowing 'P' balls dropped by certain enemies throughout the game, with more balls held equating to more powerful strikes. Given the similarities and in visual style and gameplay design, I think it's difficult to not draw comparisons with Metal Slug. Although there's plenty of of good stuff in Top Hunter, I didn't find it nearly as entertaining or rewarding. I never quite got used to the difference between jumping and swapping between the different playfields, often pressing the wrong button, and having to keep changing zones to grab power-ups and tackle enemies breaks the flow of the game. This is probably less of an issue in multiplayer where each player can cover a playfield by themselves, but I just found it a bit of an inconvenience in solo play. The other aspect of the game which I found lacking was the actual combat. The majority of enemies you face are low-level grunts, all of whom can be dispatched with a couple of punches, which makes the specials somewhat redundant. They can be quite useful on the bosses, using ranged attacks to stay out danger, but there's little-to-no reason to use them against most of the regular enemies. Top Hunter is definitely worth playing, especially with another person, but it doesn't quite have the long term appeal of the original Metal Slug, and I suspect you might come away from playing this feeling oddly dissatisfied - it just doesn't quite hit the spot.
