I really don't have enough good things to say about Hughes. First of all, it really doesn't get more unique and innovative than this rig. We passed this going to dump on the way into Tucson Estates looking for it. After waiting for about an hour and a half, we finally see what we were waiting for pulling in: this one-of-a-kind compaction trailer. Due to the fact Titan, Hughes, and Desert Dwellers Disposal (now WM) ran these kinds of rigs I always figured there was some local microbuilder creating these. But alas, the driver/owner told us he makes them all himself and has build about 7 of these, improving them as they go. This was his first. I can't begin to describe how ingenious this trailer is. First of all, he has the ability to distribute trash throughout the entire body before beginning to pack. This allows him to throw the larger and heavier stuff towards the rear of the body and the more easily compactable trash towards the packer. This allows never makes him have to wait on a packer to clear the hopper as is the case with a traditional MSL. Other benefits of this trailer include low cost, light weight, and flexibility. I particularly appreciated the very simple crusher panel. Being that this is the very first packer trailer, I certainly cannot wait to see the improvements on his later more refined trailers. On to the operation itself: He starts in their large trailer park (takes multiple days to cover it) collecting trash in the trailer and throwing bagged recycling in the back of the truck. You may notice some recycling being thrown in with the trash, this is due to resident non-compliance: recycling is required to be bagged so it can be thrown in the pickup. After finishing the route, the bagged recycling is offloaded into an on-site rolloff (collected with yet another homemade trailer). The body raises and an internal divider is set (I'm not entirely sure how that works, unfortunately I wasn't able to get a video of the divider) so he can meetup with another trash crew (they were using an open top trailer) to collect loose recycling in another trailer park of theirs. With the divider in place, it allows them to pack recycling into the same trailer without mixing; this is why the rear access doors are now closing. I'm sure many of you can appreciate how old school the whole operation is, from the homemade trailer to full manual routes with hauler provided manual bins, complete with stenciled names and phone numbers. Huge thanks to the owner/driver and his crew for allowing us to follow around and ask so many questions about the whole operation. I'm optimistic the future will bring more videos of his other creations.
