For local government purposes it is in the unitary authority of Medway. Gillingham means a "homestead of Gylla's family", from Old English ham and ingas, and was first recorded in the 10th century as Gyllingeham. Gillingham Park lies approximately 1.3 km south of Gillingham railway station and 300m north-east from the junction of the A2 (Rainham Road) and Canterbury Street. It occupies an area of 6.47 hectares (16 acres).
