Railway Posts Office (RPO) cars were in use from the mid-1880s through the 1970s in the United States. At height of "mail by rail," some 9,000 train routes covered 200,000 miles in North America. With growing reliance on highway delivery and the decline of passenger rail travel, Railway Post Office cars declined with them. The museum has long been home to the Southern No. 36 Railway Post Office car, on long term loan from the Smithsonian. Fully restored, it looks exactly like the RPO cars in the video.
