Backyard chickens. My childhood revolved around the feathered array ever since I could walk; which may or may not of been ardent to my personal well-being. Yes, these’s domesticated fowl have been companions of mine, I would raise them from just hatchlings up to adult hen or roos. An uncle would receive my flock to join his own on his ranch and thus a mission in life sparked in my heart. Here a Silkie is being introduced to an established flock of Rhode Island Red hens. Poetically, these two breeds are the most territorial so complications are foresight. Earlier an attempt was made to do the same which, horrifically, resulted in the death of a Silkie hen; board-mate to the Silkie roo. This time I introduced the mate-less roo to the hen flock. Under supervision, I isolated the alpha of the hens by scoping out the behavior of the flock. The hen that initiated the most aggressive characteristics, I would assume was the alpha. Once I saw enough challenges between the hen and roo I migrated her to a neighboring cage. After a few weeks, once I was confident my roo took control over the two hens, I will re-introduce the aggressor hen and have another update for you.
