He was a Shaman whose powers turned evil, he was banished to the Falls valley and began terrorizing the tribe. After killing the Chief's son, an epic mano a mano battle ensued between the Chief and his Evil Shaman. The Legend of Tahquitz and Chief Algoot, a tale of sacrifice, bravery and vanquished evil has been passed from generation to generation for over 2,000 years. To this day, the boulder that rests near Strawberry Creek upon which the face of Tahquitz is emblazoned is the subject of much controversy. Algoot instructed his tribe to avoid touching the rock, for in doing so the trickster Tahquitz is awakened from his spirit slumber. Whispered stories are often shared that tell of those who have defiled the rock have come to bad fortune, injury or worse. There are tales of those who have sought and perhaps even have found the empty cave that Tahquitz once dwelled in have suffered similar fates. There are a lot of overlapping thoughts of a Shaman curse when you are actually there in person I can attest..
