Equipment--cheap bows can make your bow bounce and shake no matter how advanced you are. 2. Not Starting From the String. If you let the bow drop to the string it will act like a bouncy ball aaannndddd.....bounce! 3. Not starting in the right place in the bow. Not warming up means you will be stiff and "cold" which contributes to that bow bounce. 2:27 5. Using Pressure Not Weight to Get a Tone. Using pressure (using the force of your wrist and fingers) to get a sound from the bow will equal squeaking, bouncing, scratching, and screeching with your bow. Use weight (the relaxed weight of your arm and shoulder) transferred through the hands to the fingers to the bow to get a good tone. 3:59 6. Improper/tense bow hold. It's not a bow grip! Incorrect elbow level. Your right elbow must at the correct position for each string to correctly transfer weight to the bow. If your elbow is at the incorrect position, you'll use pressure not weight and the bow will bounce. 5:07 8. Not applying the right amount of weight for where you are in the bow. The amount of weight you need to use to get a good tone changes depending on where you are in the bow and what string you are on. Using the wrong amount of weight will make the bow shake, wobble, and bounce. Experiment to find the optimal amount of weight. 6:23 9. Tensing up during changes in bow direction. Down bows tend to make students tense up or add too much weight or pressure. Relax during bow direction changes to keep that bow bounce under control. 6:51 10. You're out of practice. If it's been a while since you last practiced or perhaps you haven't been playing that long, your bow will bounce.
