From October 10 to October 12, 2024, Université Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne hosted the Una Europa Rugby Challenge. As part of this sporting event, a roundtable was organised, bringing together academics, rugby players, students, and a European policy maker, to discuss the significance of sport for European integration and its impact on European identity. The roundtable was moderated by Professor Fabienne Peraldi Leneuf (Chair of Una Europa’s Board of Directors, and Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne’s Vice-President for Europe from 2021 to 2024) and Arnaud Richard (President of the French National and Olympic Sports Committee). The panelists included: Polina Khomenko, European Commission Representation in France. Fabien Archambault, Professor of History, Paris 1 Panthéon-Sorbonne University. Arthur Garrido, Vice-President for the National Association of Students in Sciences and Technique of Physical and Sports Activities. Drummond McGinn, rugby player (men’s team) and student at University College Dublin. Lucia Martínez Sánchez, rugby player (women’s team) and student at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. Noelia Bermudez Gonzalez, rugby player (women’s team) and student at Universidad Complutense de Madrid. During this academic event, the panelists had the opportunity to share their own experiences regarding the cultural, educational, sociological, and political dimensions of sport. They also discussed the relationship between sport and citizenship. Additionally, the roundtable served as a platform to present existing European funding opportunities through the Erasmus+ programme and to highlight students’ involvement in sports associations and its impact on their academic life.
