W-algebras: Physical and mathematical aspects - Dr. Connor Behan

Abstract: It has been known since the work of Coleman and Mandula that very few spacetime symmetry algebras are possible for quantum field theories in dimension d more than 2. The situation changes drastically in d = 2. I will discuss a version of this for conformal field theories which leads to a mathematical structure sometimes known as a W-algebra. The main goal will be showing how one might construct a handful of W-algebras and identifying analogues of the Virasoro minimal models for them. Time permitting, I will discuss newer applications like the appearance of W-algebras after performing a superconformal twist.
