In this episode, we explored: 1) The key events that led to the drying of the Aral Sea and examined the process behind the successful restoration of the Small Aral Sea. 2) We discussed how upstream countries — Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan — negotiate water-sharing norms with downstream countries such as Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, highlighting the complexity of transboundary water governance. 3) The conversation also touched on major regional water projects, including Turkmenistan’s Karakum Canal drawing water from the Amu Darya and Afghanistan’s Qosh Tepa Canal, and their implications for regional water security. 4) Finally, we addressed the accelerating melting of mountain glaciers, the resulting risks to drinking water supplies, and possible solutions to adapt to future shortages.
