Alte Oper Frankfurt, 1991 Pierre Boulez Conducts works by Edgard Varèse Varèse (1883-1965) was the first composer to conceive sounds as objects, with sculptured spatial configuration, held together with rhythmic energy. In Ionisation, of 1931, perhaps the most daring of all his scores, the center of interest is the color of the percussive sound, the terraced articulation of its dynamic, and the unifying force of rhythm. Striving for an absolute identity of form and content, Varbse saw a parallel in the process of crystallization - the consequence of the interaction of attractive and repulsive forces. With two works, Varbse affected a revolution in the music of our century.
