The Historic Feline & Primate Building at Potter Park Zoo. Filmed April 30, 2022. Big Cats and Primates! Two of the world’s most iconic life forms together in one building. The Lion House opened in 1930, modeled after the Carnivora Building at the Toledo Zoo. As was typical of the time, the emphasis was on things like offering visitors a clear view of the animals and displaying as many species as possible, so the living conditions for the inhabitants was not great. In 1989 the building received a major renovation, where the number of exhibits and species was reduced offering those that remained larger living spaces, and it was renamed the Feline & Primate Building. Today, the building and surrounding habitats still give off a bit of that classic, older zoo feel. It currently houses 8 species; 3 Big Cats, 2 Primates and 3 other types of animals.
