Fathers of children with autism: The impact of a support group on a father's wellbeing

This presentation will begin by introducing the literature on the psychological experiences of parents of children with autism, with a focus on the dearth of available research on fathers. It will describe the results of a study in which a support group for fathers of children with autism was designed, delivered, and evaluated. Weekly discussion topics included dealing with the diagnosis, and the impact of having a child with autism on personal and professional relationships. In addition to reviewing the support group protocol, the presentation will describe the results of the outcome measures that evaluated participants' psychological experiences pre-and post-group, and their perceptions of the group's utility and value.
