ASCE Shows You How to Use Social Media for Engineering Organizations

In today’s social media climate, careful curation of information, and means of distribution, are just as important as what is being said. Whether it’s showcasing the array of projects your firm leads, your agency’s community involvement, or announcing your presentation at the next professional conference, a thoughtful approach to social media can be a powerful tool to reach your target audience. Social media has become a tool for reputation management, and if used well, may help supplement other ongoing outreach efforts. This presentation will review ways that social media can be used as a tool for your engineering organization including common misconceptions, strategies, reaching goals, best practices, crisis communication, and use of hashtags. This is a recording of the presentation given to the ASCE Capital Branch on June 2, 2020. About the speaker Elizabeth Avelar, P.E., CFM Elizabeth formerly served as social media chair for ASCE’s Capital Branch and currently serves as the Social Media and Technology chair for the CA-NV-HI Floodplain Management Association (FMA). Along with the committee members, Elizabeth helps set outreach goals in coordination with other committees such as FMA’s Emerging Professionals, manages social media content, and is assisting in the redesign of FMA’s webpage. Currently a civil engineer at Kjeldsen, Sinnock & Neudeck, Inc. (KSN), Elizabeth works on flood control and water resources projects in Northern and Central California.
