The sound of tape has burnt into my brain as a 5-year-old child. I have listened all the Kraftwerk, all those Jean-Michel Jarre albums on reel-to-reel tape. The tape sound is also essential in everyday mixing/mastering sessions: smearing transients, increasing thickness and maximizing impact. Tape machines are complex electro-mechanical contraptions, and it is not trivial to emulate all the imperfections of magnetic medium, transducers, electronics and transport mechanics. This comparison takes the best of the best: those plugins that I would use in a mastering job without hesitation. It is not the purpose to pick a winner and a loser, it's more about studying differences in sound and understanding which tool is best for what purpose.
