Song: Intentions Artist: Nuna Spotify link: https://open.spotify.com/track/0grc2X6v6sz... This video is about the microphone shootout we did for Nuna her vocals. Wolf Recording has a beautiful sounding vintage Neumann U87 and a modern Chandler Limited REDD microphone. I brought my Josephson C725 and just for fun we also threw in a much cheaper condensor mic. The latter one being an Aston Spirit. As the video shows we did four different takes. So this is not a scientific reproduction of the differences between each microphone. Nevertheless this shootout will give any trained ear an understanding of what flavours these mics bring to the table. Also it will be apparent what the differences are between low- & high-budget microphones. After level matching the audioclips (based on integrated lufs), we did a blind test. We could immediately tell what the cheaper mic was due to the harshness and excessive amount of highs. Next we could pick out the Neumann because of the typical mid forwardness. The other two mics were definitely the most ‘expensive’ sounding. In the end we went with the Josephson C725. The high end was smoother and the low end sounded fuller. But the real magic happened when we compared all mics in the mix. The way the C725 treated her vocal in the mix had a certain vibe to it. A certain ‘sexiness’ for lack of a better word. The REDD and the U87 just didn’t do this.
