On the 14th March 2025, it was officially announced that the ALL BBMF aircraft were cleared to fly again after the tragedy and loss of 25th May 2024. TE311 takes to the skies for the first time with its wonderful tribute on its starboard side, to Squadron Leader Mark Long, who sadly lost his life in the tragedy. We shall never forget. TE311 was built at the Castle Bromwich ‘shadow’ factory as a ‘low back’, ‘clipped wing’, Packard Merlin 266 powered L.F.XVIe. This year we were treated to a new Typhoon display livery to commemorate the 80th D-Day landings anniversary but another new livery is also taking to the skies, the BBMF's Spitfire TE311. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) Spitfire Mk XVI TE311 has had major servicing and work carried out with The Spitfire Company (Biggin Hill) Ltd since May 2022. This caused delays to the planned output date for TE311. In fact the Spitfire’s wings had to be completely overhauled, with new wing spars being fitted. The wings were overhauled and then refitted to the Spitfire and TE311 has been painted into its new colour scheme which represents Spitfire TD322 ‘3W-M’ of 322 (Dutch) Squadron. It also features nose art showing the 322 Squadron mascot, ‘Polly Grey’, a red-tailed parrot. The aircraft underwent post-Major ground engine runs in late November and needs its Military Airworthiness Review (MAR) – similar to an annual MOT on a car – completed by the MilCAM MAR team before it can fly. 322 Squadron (RNLAF) is the oldest operational squadron of the Royal Netherlands Air Force (RNLAF). It currently operates the Lockheed Martin F-35A Lightning II from Leeuwarden Air Base, Friesland. The Squadron were originally founded at RAF Woodvale, United Kingdom, on 12 June 1943 as No. 322 (Dutch) Squadron with Dutch personnel under Royal Air Force control. After the war, No. 322 Squadron was disbanded as a RAF squadron on 7 October 1945 but on the 27th September 1946, No. 322 Squadron was reactivated as part of the Dutch Armed Forces, operating the Supermarine Spitfire Mk.IX. In September 1947, the squadron was sent to the Dutch East Indies. Based at Kalidjati Air Base and later Kalibanteng Air Base the unit operated in the Dutch East Indies before returning to the Netherlands and disbanding in October 1949. The RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) operates from RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. The mission of the RAF BBMF is to maintain the priceless artefacts of our national heritage in airworthy condition in order to commemorate those who have fallen in the service of this country. The RAF BBMF also serves to promote the modern day Air Force and to inspire the future generations. The Flight operates five Spitfires, two Hurricanes, a Lancaster, a C47 Dakota, and two Chipmunk aircraft (primarily for training). The aircraft are flown by regular RAF Aircrew. The Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) was inaugurated on 11 July 1957 at RAF Biggin Hill. It was initially called the RAF Historic Aircraft Flight and consisted of three PR Mk XIX Spitfires and the RAF’s last airworthy Hurricane, LF363. It was then renamed to be the Battle of Britain Flight before a final renaming in 1969 to what it is known as today, BBMF. Between 1959 and 1965 the flight had one Spitfire (PM631) and one Hurricane (LF363) on its strength. Now, as a ‘museum without walls’, it maintains twelve historic and irreplaceable aircraft: an Avro Lancaster, a C-47 Dakota, six Spitfires, two Hurricanes and two de Havilland Chipmunk training aircraft. The BBMF is a regular RAF unit, manned by service personnel and funded by the Ministry of Defence. “Lest We Forget” The Lest We Forget motto of the RAF BBMF reflects our mission and honours the thousands of men and women, in the air and on the ground, that gave their lives for this country in the noble pursuit of freedom.
