With the opening of the Interventional Radiology Suite at the UT Veterinary Medical Center, clinicians are able to use advanced real-time imaging equipment and minimally invasive procedures to intervene in disease processes. The suite contains a fluoroscopy unit, specialized table and suite-specific equipment. The fluoroscopy unit provides real-time X-rays of anatomy, allowing specialists to see and navigate vascular structures in the head, chest, or abdomen. In addition to specialized equipment, our surgeons, cardiologists and internal medicine specialists underwent extensive training. This is the only such suite available in a veterinary hospital in Tennessee. One of the first procedures to utilize the suite was percutaneous transjugular (or transvenous) coil embolization (PTCE) performed on a 10-month old German shepherd with a clinical intrahepatic portosystemic shunt that could not be surgically corrected. Only a few hospitals in the country use this technique.
