Erik Dutson is the executive medical director of the Center for Advanced Surgical and Interventional Technology at the University of California, Los Angeles. As a clinician and researcher, Dr. Dutson uses his own experience in the operating room to drive his work in the lab. A current focus of his work and that of his research team is computer-mediated minimally-invasive surgery and surgical training technologies. By interweaving technology and information between the surgeon, surgical tools and patient — for instance the data from an MRI or CT scan — he can, virtually, give surgeons augmented vision resulting in better surgical outcomes. His work is funded by the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation and the Department of Defense.
