I'm about to tell you. Scheduling sex can be one of the most important things you can do. I know it doesn't seem as great as when we watch the notebook and it's so spur of the moment and so spontaneous, however the thing is, if we don't schedule it, it'll never happen. Number two, as a female we kind of need a little time to prepare. Let me tell you what I mean by that. If you have a full day of meetings, a full day of errands, the house is a mess, and your husband decides to put the moves on you that night, is your brain really going to help you be there and be present and enjoy it?? Probably not. And I'm certain we've all been there when one of us has been all about it and the other one hasn't. I'm not here to tell you how to run your marriage or how your intimacy should take place. I'm telling you some of the same things that some friends of mine who are sex therapists say - to schedule it. Again, if our brain isn't there and we're not ready it's probably not going to be enjoyable. If you've been following me to figure out how to manage your pain with intercourse this is one of the most important things. Let me tell you a quick story. I once had a patient who had pain with intimacy. She and I worked on her pelvic floor and worked on it until it was healthy and then she told me “okay, I think I'm ready to try having - having intercourse” and I said, “that's fantastic! Let me know how it goes. Hope that pelvic floor is healthy like we've prepared it to be”. So then she comes back and she says “oh my word! It hurt. I I I don't know what I'm doing wrong”. And so we delved into it and what we found was that she was working right up until the last minute her and her partner decided that they were going to be intimate. And what we realized was, is because she was working and working and working where her brain was focusing was on all those things and then she said “oh my timer went off it's time to be intimate with my partner”. The reason I tell you to schedule it is so that you can have time to kind of turn your brain off from whatever activity you're working on and then you can transition to being with your partner - to being with your spouse, whomever it is. Let me give you three tips: First, schedule it. It can be a recurring day of the month it really doesn't matter. Second, put him in charge of scheduling it! A little bonus tip - I might let him know the days that you might be less busy during the week. And then the third thing I would tell you, and this one I think is sometimes the hardest, is know yourself. Know ‘what time of the month do I feel the best about myself that I might want to schedule this so it's a great experience for the both of us’. Know yourself, ‘man, I might be a little more bloated towards the end of the month and maybe that's not what I want to be doing it’. All these little things about your body - take into account so that you can enhance that experience and have a really enjoyable time with your partner. These tips may not be groundbreaking but they are important to enhancing your intimacy with your partner. I am changing the conversation on women's health and I need your help.
