Presented by Louis Inghilterra during the February 11, 2026 Chapter Meeting of Docomomo US/Colorado. About the Talk: We had a sneak peak of this photo archive at our • Open Slide Night: Mountain Modern Architec... and are excited to share more at this month's Chapter Meeting! The New York Catskill Mountains was once home to over 500 modernist resorts. Located 90 miles northwest of New York City, the area was once known as the Borscht Belt. From the 1920s to the 1990s it was a haven for Jewish immigrants who were excluded from vacationing elsewhere. The Borscht Belt was the birthplace of stand up comedy and has connections to many aspects of American history in the 20th Century. Join us for a fascinating presentation led by Louis Inghilterra, who will explore the architectural history of this forgotten paradise. About Louis Inghilterra: Louis Inghilterra is a New York Hudson Valley native currently based in Denver, Colorado. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Interior Architecture and Design with a minor in History from Colorado State University in Fort Collins. Louis’ lifelong passion for architecture, antiques, and historic preservation has shaped his career goal: to preserve and adaptively reuse abandoned historic buildings across the United States. Louis is the co-founder of the Borscht Belt Historical Marker Project (https://borschtbelthistoricalmarkerpr...), a nonprofit dedicated to preserving the legacy of the Jewish vacation destination in New York’s Catskill Mountains through the installation of roadside historical markers. All Are Welcome Here: Docomomo US/Colorado generally holds chapter meetings on the second Wednesday of every month, and we have an annual Modernism Series event featuring home and neighborhood tours, talks, and much more. You are welcome to attend our meetings and events, even if you aren’t a member of our chapter. Visit https://DocomomoCO.org to learn more. Are you knowledgable about a topic related to Colorado’s modern architecture and design, past, present and future? We invite you to give a talk at one of our upcoming chapter meetings! Reach out to info@DocomomoCO.org and let us know what you have in mind. Docomomo US/Colorado is local club of folks who are enthusiasts of modern architecture and design in the state of Colorado and beyond. As a part of the greater Docomomo US organization, we work on documenting and advocating for the preservation of modern architecture - but mostly, we are an informal community of people who come together from all walks of life, from working preservation, design, and real estate professionals, to people who just love the modern movement and want to learn more about it. We are also a 501(c)(3) non-profit, and welcome your donations. 0:00 – Introduction 2:33 – The Borscht Belt: A Mountain Mecca for Modernism Talk 26:20 – Dining/Drinking 30:40 – Nite Clubs 36:40 – Outdoor Pools 41:11 – Indoor Pools 50:15 – Skating Rink 51:38 – Celebrities 53:28 – Decline 1:00:41 – Borscht Belt Historical Market Project 1:01:37 – Q&A/Open Discussion Intro Music: The 80s Cruise performed by Playdays2021/stock.adobe.com
