The name of Yangma Island has changed multiple times throughout history. According to legend, during the Warring States period, people from the state of Ju took refuge here, hence it was called Ju Island. It was also known as Elephant Island because there is a small island to the east that resembles a giant elephant bathing in the water. There are two legends about the origin of the name "Yangma Island" (Horse Breeding Island). The first legend dates back to the autumn of 219 BC when Emperor Qin Shi Huang was on an eastern tour. As he traveled eastward along the coast from Zhifu, he and his entourage arrived opposite Ju Island at noon, feeling exhausted. Suddenly, a breeze carried a fragrant scent and the sound of horses neighing. Looking towards the island, they saw lush peaks and verdant vegetation, with a group of fine horses frolicking. Qin Shi Huang couldn't help but exclaim, "What a wonderful island for horse breeding!" He then decreed this place as the "Imperial Horse Breeding Island," ordering horses to be sent from various places and personnel to train them for imperial use. Later, due to dissatisfaction with Qin Shi Huang's rule, the locals dropped the word "Imperial" and simply called it Yangma Island. The second legend dates back to the early Ming Dynasty when Japanese pirates harassed coastal residents. To avoid the pirates, many residents of Ju Island moved inland, leaving the land temporarily unoccupied. Due to its fertile soil, military officers defending against the pirates used this land for horse breeding, thus giving it the name Yangma Island.
