30 years on from Mick Doohan’s maiden 500cc World Championship, we take a look back at MotoGP's season 1994; a season that is often described as the most dominant season in MotoGP™ history. After a 1993 season that was clearly impacted by injuries following an incident that almost claimed the career (and leg) of the future legend, all the talk in the lead up to 1994 was around Doohan’s recovery and if those injuries sustained following the 1992 incident were going to have a lasting effect on his racing. It didn’t take long for the world to have its answer. Doohan would go on to win seven of the season's first nine races, to out an exclamation point of what was one of the most physically challenging periods of his career. Doohan would finish the 1994 season having climbed the top step of the podium for nine of the season’s 14 races (the most since Giacomo Agostini’s 11 race wins in 1972), with five other podium finishes to complete one of the most dominant seasons in motorcycle racing history. His World Championship in 1994 made Mick Doohan only the second Australian behind Wayne Gardner in 1987 to win a 500cc World Championship and marked the start of a reign that would see the Aussie legend crowned World Champion five years in a row.
