A former Safaricom customer care representative, Ann Kanana Mwenda, has filed a lawsuit against the telecommunications giant, seeking Kshs. 130 million in damages. The lawsuit alleges a harrowing experience of mental torture, harassment, and even intrusive medical procedures during her employment. Mwenda claims that the company provided poor-quality headphones that led to permanent hearing damage, including conditions like acoustic shock, vertigo, tinnitus, and hyperacusis. She also describes a toxic work environment with long hours that contributed to clinical depression and suicidal thoughts. The most shocking allegations involve claims of being subjected to cruel, inhuman, and degrading human experiments and intrusive medical procedures that violated her bodily dignity. The lawsuit further alleges that Safaricom discarded her once she was deemed “damaged goods.” This case follows a precedent set by a previous lawsuit, Eva Bessy Kathambi vs. Safaricom Ltd [2023] KLR, where the court found Safaricom had failed to provide a safe working environment. Ann Kanana Mwenda is being represented on a pro bono basis by lawyer Saitabao ole Kanchory. Join us as we delve into the details of this shocking case, exploring the allegations, the potential legal ramifications for Safaricom, and the broader implications for employee rights and corporate accountability in Kenya.
