A Drive Around Schenectady, NY One of my subscribers had watched some of the videos of my drives around Rochester, NY and Ogdensburg, NY and asked if I had ever planned on doing a driving video around Schenectady, NY. Well, I took their suggestion and here it is. I mentioned the streets as I drove by them. Follow along on Google maps and check out the route. Here is a little history of Schenectady. The area was originally inhabited by the Iroquois Mohawk tribe. The Dutch reached the Hudson Valley in the middle of the 17th century. The Mohawks denoted the Fort Orange settlement as Schau-naugh-ta-da, meaning "over the pine plains." Eventually however, this word became part of the Dutch language, but its meaning was reversed, and meant the bend in the Mohawk River the city present location. [1] Contrary to prevalent beliefs, Schenectady and nearby Niskayuna were not occupied by the Mohawk; settlements in the vicinity of Schenectady and Niskayuna, belonged to the Mohican, who were pushed east of the Hudson River by 1634. The area was part of the Dutch colony of New Netherland with Schenectady founded by Arent Van Curler of Nijkerk, the Netherlands, in 1664. The town was attacked and overrun by French and Indian forces on February 8, 1690, (The Schenectady Massacre) who burned the village and killed all but sixty of its inhabitants. [2] Schenectady was incorporated as a borough in 1765. It was granted city status in 1798. During the American Revolutionary War, the 2nd Albany County Militia Regiment was active in the Battle of Saratoga and against Loyalist forces. [3] In 1795, Union College was founded, and Thomas Edison moved his Edison Machine Works to Schenectady in 1887. Schenectady became the headquarters of General Electric Company in 1892. In the 19th century, nationally prominent companies and industries, such as General Electric and American Locomotive Company (ALCO), formed in Schenectady. These companies and industries continued dominance until the middle of the 20th century. Schenectady was engaged in developing technologies, with GE worked in collaboration on the construction of nuclear-powered submarines and employed in other forms of renewable energy in the 21st century. WGY-AM, located in Schenectady was one of the first commercial radio stations in the United States.[4] I hope you enjoyed the drive around Schenectady. I tried to give you a range of the city’s neighborhoods from downtown to some of the more residential sections. I’m always surprised on how the city grew over time and in some cases the commercial store sites moved to other locations and today into the suburbs. At one time workers could walk to GE because they lived in “walking distances.” Today they drive to work, and downtown residences are gone or have been converted into apartments. Thanks for watching the video. Please subscribe and ring the bell so you know when the next video comes out. Leave a comment too. Tell me what you think and of course, make suggestions. This video comes from a suggestion. Have a nice day! [1] Brandon J. Broderick. History of Schenectady, New York, https://www.brandonjbroderick.com/new..., 2025. [2] Ibid. [3] Ibid. [4] Ibid.
