On May 21, 1972, Christopher Wallace, aka The Notorious B.I.G., was born at St. Mary's Hospital in Brooklyn. Raised in Bedford-Stuyvesant, he was the only child of Voletta Wallace, a preschool teacher. A high school dropout, Biggie went from hustling crack to becoming the leader of East Coast hip hop. After his deal with Uptown Records fell through, Biggie released his debut album, Ready to Die, on Bad Boy in 1994. Ready to Die exposed the world to Biggie's multi-syllabic rhymes, untouchable flow and storytelling abilities. The album went Gold just two months after its release and is considered one of the best rap albums of all time. In 1995, Biggie executive produced Conspiracy, the debut album of his neighborhood rap crew, Junior M.A.F.I.A. The following year, Junior Mafia standout Lil Kim went solo. Biggie executive produced her debut, Hard Core. That same year, Biggie’s rivalry with Tupac Shakur became public, as the relationship between the one-time friends frayed following Tupac's infamous robbery at Quad City studios in New York. Tupac accused Biggie of setting up the robbery that left Pac with five bullet holes. That year, Shakur signed with Suge Knight and Death Row, setting off a bicoastal rap war. A year later Shakur was fatally shot while driving with Knight in Las Vegas. His murder is still unsolved. Six months later, Biggie was shot dead in a car after leaving an industry party in L.A. That murder also remains unsolved. Biggie’s double album, Life After Death, was released posthumously 16 days after his death. It was his first No. 1 album, and was eventually certified Diamond for sales in excess of 10 million copies. The single "Hypnotize," became Biggie's first No.1 single. Biggie was survived by his son Christopher Wallace Jr., his daughter T’Yanna and his widow Faith Evans. Watch our Daily Operation video above.
