Activate Present Perfect with Explain the Feeling 👩🏻🏫👨🏾🏫🧑🏼🏫 We all know learners sometimes struggle with Present Perfect In the previous activity video, we agreed on an effective strategy to automate present perfect with Make Assumptions and the clear and reliable explanation that “Present Perfect explains now” 😎 Learners have now had the opportunity to play with their interpretations of phrases in present perfect Let’s take it up a notch and now engage learners in making their own present perfect examples to imply a feeling 👍 1️⃣ Start with an example feeling for students to brainstorm together phrases in present perfect that would imply this feeling the clear For instance, ask students how they can imply that “I am thirsty” They might come up with examples like: “It’s been really hot today!” “I’ve been stuck in a traffic jam in the heat!” “I’ve just run from the bus stop to be on time for the meeting!” As you can see, learners come up with their own phrases in Present Perfect that could imply or explain the original feeling of “I’m thirsty” 👨🏽🎓🧑🎓👩🏻🎓 Yes, a Present Perfect indicates something in the past But the focus is on now 😎 Whenever you hear Present Perfect, ask yourself “what does it mean about now?” 2️⃣ Explain the Feeling activity 👌 Now put your students in pairs or in groups and tell them they are going to do the same together In turns, they pick a card and read the feeling on the card As a group, they make Present Perfect sentences that explain this feeling, as in the example above 3️⃣ Explain the Feeling challenge 👨🏽🎓🧑🎓👩🏻🎓 You can absolutely expand this into a challenge in the groups or as a class Who can go through the cards the fastest? What is the most humorous answer in the class? How many sentences for one card can you make in 1 minute?
