Using the OBS Feature on the IFD440 with Avidyne Entegra and DFC90 autopilot

To perfectly intercept a Desired Track or, like in this case, the extended centerline of a runway you can use the OBS feature. 1. Check the Final Approach course of the runway (works best if you use the precise value from the taxi chart). In this case I wanted to to intercept the final of runway 07 of my home airport EDML. The precise value is 063 degrees. The airport has to be the active waypoint. 2. Press the upper right IFD button to switch the navigator from GPS mode to OBS. Before you do that center the heading bug. 3. Using the lower left know of the PFD (PFD!) enter the value for the course: 063. 4. Press HDG+NAV on the autopilot and use the Heading knob of the PFD to select an appropriate Heading to intercept the final track. The status line on the PFD will now say HDG active (green) and NAV armed (blue). The DFC90 will intercept the course at any angle but best use the typical 45 or 30 degrees. 5. Also set the pattern altitude in time. In this case 2500 feet and descend with ALT+VS on the autopilot. ALT will be blue, VS green. 6. When you reach the selected final track/magenta course line the autopilot will smoothly intercept it.
