Castle Carr, in the valley of Luddenden Dean. was built for Captain Joseph Edwards, beginning in 1859 and completed around 1867 Edwards never got to live in his 'castle' as he and his eldest son were killed in a train crash in Wales in 1868, the worst rail accident in the UK at that point. Edwards younger son completed the castle, but lived in it for only 4 years. Going through life as a munitions store as well as a hunting lodge, the buildingbwas eventually demolished (mostly) in the 1960s. Today, and on one day each year, the grounds ate reopened to visitors. This includes a display of the wonderful fountain that, hitting heights of 130 feet, is still the second highest reaching fountain in the UK.
