• Just Travels, where will we be next week? Brixham is a historic fishing town on the southern coast of Devon, England, and part of the district of Torbay. Its history stretches back more than a thousand years — shaped by fishing, shipbuilding, and maritime trade. Brixham has grown into a tourist destination, known for: Its picturesque harbour and colourful cottages. The replica of the Golden Hind, Sir Francis Drake’s famous ship. Annual events like the Brixham Pirate Festival and Trawler Race. The arrival of the railway to nearby Paignton (1859) opened South Devon to visitors from London and the Midlands. People began taking day trips and short breaks to Torbay’s coastal towns — Torquay, Paignton, and Brixham. Brixham, smaller and less formal than Torquay, appealed to visitors seeking a working harbour and authentic fishing atmosphere rather than high society. Guesthouses, tea rooms, and boarding houses began to appear around the harbour and along King Street and Berry Head Road. During the 1920s and 1930s, Brixham’s popularity grew thanks to improved roads and bus links from Torquay. Local attractions like Berry Head, the Napoleonic forts, and the coastal walks drew hikers and nature lovers. After World War II, the town became a favourite for British seaside holidays, especially families from the Midlands and London. Many stayed in holiday camps and small hotels, and boat trips around the bay became a popular pastime. It remains a working fishing port, combining tradition with tourism. As the fishing industry declined, Brixham began embracing its maritime history. A major turning point was the replica of Sir Francis Drake’s ship, the Golden Hind, first moored in Brixham Harbour in the 1960s. It became an instant attraction, especially for families. The town started hosting regattas, trawler races, and maritime festivals celebrating its seafaring roots. Bed & breakfasts flourished, and the harbour remained the town’s heart — colourful, busy, and photogenic. Today, Brixham is known for blending working fishing heritage with tourist appeal: The Brixham Fish Market is open for guided tours, showing visitors the early-morning fish auctions. The Brixham Heritage Museum tells the story of fishing, shipbuilding, and local life. The Brixham Pirate Festival (each May) draws thousands, celebrating the town’s swashbuckling image. The Brixham Trawler Race continues the fishing tradition with a fun, competitive spirit. Coastal paths, boat trips to Torquay and Dartmouth, and wildlife watching (especially dolphins and seals) attract visitors year-round. The town’s harbourfront cafés, galleries, and seafood restaurants — serving freshly landed fish — are central to the local economy. Brixham now welcomes around half a million visitors a year, many staying in holiday cottages, boutique hotels, and caravan parks overlooking the bay. #devon #exeter #devonlife #cornwall #southwest #plymouth #visitdevon #southdevon #dartmoor #northdevon #torquay #uk #torbay #nature #beach #dartmouth #salcombe #photography #southhams #somerset #sea #exmouth #lovedevon #brixham #england #paignton #barnstaple #summer #love #dartmoornationalpark #devoncoast #totnes #seaside #bideford #coast #englishriviera #holiday #travel #smallbusiness #dorset #art #photooftheday #staycation #tiverton #newtonabbot #tavistock #sunset #teignmouth #christmas #countryside #ilfracombe #plymouthuk #eastdevon #shoplocal #landscapephotography #landscape #supportlocal #swisbest #topsham #croyde
